| Medicine Woman Tarot ~ Carol Bridges |
Energy is a bit low today so I asked what medicine was needed. Teaching Lodge of the Arrows and Harvest were the cards that came forward. The Courts in this deck veer so wildly away from the RWS version that I have stayed with the creator's vision for them rather than to try and make traditional associations. The Courts are Apprentice (Page), Totem (Knight), Lodge (Queen) and Exemplar (King). Each of the four Lodges is given an attribute so Harvest Lodge for the earth suit, Nurturing Lodge for the water suit, Power Lodge for the fire suit and Teaching Lodge for the air suit.
Teaching Lodge of the Arrows : Liberator shows a figure clad in golden-yellow raising hands high in salutation to the sun. She stands in a lodge made of birch poles forming an apex at the tip, an earth-colored triangle that houses the sun whose throne is an inverted triangle, symbol of the goddess. In front is an oval portal, doorway between worlds. Behind her sit three shamanistic figures--deer woman, wolf woman and buffalo woman. I feel drawn to these figures, to their transformative potential, their secrets. And in fact the message of this card is that of liberation through revisioning the world. The author suggests creating one's own Teaching Lodge by surrounding oneself with images, sounds, people, that inspire and uplift and to actively avoid things that bring one down.
The Wheel of Fortune card, here renamed Harvest, is a skillful use of the word. Harvest doesn't always imply bounty but rather reaping what we sow. If we've sown well, the harvest generally reflects that. If we've sown poorly, the harvest will be scant. In this card the harvest looks to be abundant with corn as high as en elephant's eye and lovely stars streaming out from the earth's relationship with the sun. Below it all the fruits and vegetables rest in a rainbow of color suggestive of the many hands that have tended to them, the intention that shaped them. I'm aware of the thoughts and emotions I'm 'sowing' today and how they are being reaped through my actions and intention. One might even say harvest is a state of mind...
The Harvest Moon
No sky could hold
so much light–
and here comes the brimming,
the flooding and streaming
out of the clouds
and into the leaves,
glazing the creeks,
the smallest ditches!
And so many stars!
The sky seems stretched
like an old black cloth;
behind it, all
the celestial fire
we ever dreamed of!
And the moon steps lower,
quietly changing
her luminous masks, brushing
everything as she passes
with her slow hands
and soft lips–
clusters of dark grapes,
apples swinging like lost planets,
melons cool and heavy as bodies–
and the mockingbird wakes
in his hidden castle;
out of the silver tangle
of thorns and leaves
he flutters and tumbles,
spilling long
ribbons of music
over forest and river,
copse and cloud–
all heaven and all earth–
wherever the white moon
fancies her small wild prince–
field after field after field.
